COLTS SOFTBALL COACHING STAFF

MATT MEHALICK

Head Coach

NameMatt Mehalick was tabbed in July of 2024 to be Middlesex College Softball programs next Head Coach. He has been the assistant coach at Middlesex College for the past four years under Hall of Fame coach Jim Muldowney. He brings several years of coaching experience with him in both softball and baseball.

While as an assistant his main responsibilities were working with the outfielders and hitters. In 2022, the Colts finished the season ranked in the Top 20 in the nation in several offensive categories including batting average (.335), on base percentage (.418), walks (112), hits (290), doubles (57), RBIs (185) and runs scored (225).

With Mehalick leading the way as hitting coach, Middlesex College was ranked as high as tenth in the nation in 2022 in batting average on their run to the NJCAA Division III World Series in Syracuse, NY.

Mehalick looks to strengthen the connections Muldowney established locally and aims to expand the Middlesex College recruiting footprint even further.

Mehalick played baseball at Middlesex College where he was a two-year starter for the Colts. He ended his career at Middlesex as the all-time career hits leader. After completing his studies at MC, Mehalick went on to continue his baseball career at Ramapo College, where he was a two-time NJAC conference selection and an All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection in his senior year. In his senior season, he was named team captain, and lead Ramapo to a NJAC conference championship. He earned a BS degree in Marketing from Ramapo and later earned his MBA from TESU.

Coach Mehalick is a native of Edison and resides in Middlesex County with his wife Nina and their children Bailey, Samantha, Mikayla, and Christian.


ANTHONY MULDOWNEY

Assistant Coach

nameAnthony Muldowney was hired in August of 2024 to be the Assistant Softball Coach at Middlesex College. Coach Muldowney is a 2010 graduate of North Brunswick High School, where he participated in both soccer and baseball during his career. He helped the baseball team reach back-to-back GMC/County Championship games in both his junior and senior seasons, while leading the team with 30 RBIs in 2010, which was a school record for the Raiders. He will be an asset working primarily with the infielders on their skills and fundamentals and assisting with practice organization and game strategy. Along with his contributions in several areas of our program, he is responsible for our defensive game planning, and he has called every pitch of every game over the last 3 seasons. Under his tutelage, where he was a volunteer assistant, our pitcher earned Region 19 Player of the Week honors last season. In addition, several of our players received post-season recognition, both athletically and academically, at the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Coach Muldowney is a 2014 graduate of Rutgers University, where he majored in Criminal Justice. He is currently employed by the Montgomery Township School District and resides in North Brunswick., N.J.


CHERYL KJERSGAARD

Volunteer Assistant Coach

nameCoach Kjersgaard is the longest tenured member of our coaching staff, as she begins her 7th season with the Lady Colts softball program. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our coaching staff, having served in various capacities for several travel programs throughout central New Jersey over the last 15 years. Her area of specialty is working with our pitching staff, preparing them daily during our practices, and assisting them during games, both mentally and physically. She serves many other roles in our program, both on and off the field, allowing our coaching staff to operate at maximum efficiency.

Our pitching staff has excelled over the last 3 years, with 2 of our pitchers throwing no-hitters and garnering Player of the Week recognition by the Garden State Athletic Conference. Our top pitcher was the Region 19 M.V.P. in 2022. Our pitching staff also had the #1 E.R.A. in the country at the conclusion of the 2022 regular season.

Coach Kjersgaard is a graduate of Woodbridge High School, and she currently resides in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge Township with her husband and daughter.
